The tables have turned and instead of importing, we are exporting cars to Japan. Two Made-in-India SUVs are entering the automotive sector in ‘The land of rising sun’. The two SUVs are the Maruti Suzuki Fronx and the Honda Elevate. Manufacturing of these cars started in India and have already started to dispatch to Japan. This marks the first big milestone in exporting Indian-manufactured vehicles to Japan.
A Rare phenomenon: Exporting Indian Cars to Japan
Export of cars made in India to Japan is so rare that it feels exceptional. Japan is one of the world's biggest car markets by volume and one of the advanced nations with high-tech auto technologies and very demanding clients. To be able to sell cars in such a market shows very clearly how competitive and high in quality those cars being produced by Indian manufacturers are.
Maruti Suzuki Fronx: The start of a new journey
The Maruti Suzuki Fronx has just initiated its journey to the Japanese market. It is the first time that this very model will be shipped to the Japanese market. The car will be introduced under Suzuki Motor Corporation, the parent company of Maruti Suzuki.
The Fronx is a compact SUV that, in no time at all, has been successful in India. It comes in the price range of Rs 7.51 lakh to Rs 13.03 lakh (ex-showroom) and is powered by two petrol engine options: a 1.2-liter Dual-Jet Dual-VVT petrol engine that puts out 89.73PS of power and 113Nm of torque, and a 1.0-liter Turbo Boosterjet petrol engine that produces 100.06PS and 147.6Nm of torque. While the 1.2-liter gets the option of either 5-speed manual transmission or 5-speed automated manual transmission, the latter 1-liter comes with either the 5-speed MT or 6-speed AT. Compact SUVs like the Tata Nexon, Hyundai Venue, Kia Sonet, Mahindra XUV300 are the competitors of the Fronx.
Honda Elevate: From India to Japan
The Honda Elevate is an Indian made SUV, which has started to be exported to Japan this month. In the Japanese market, it will be sold under the WR-V brand name. The price of Honda Elevate in India is between ₹11.69 lakh to ₹16.72 lakh. It is powered by a 1.5 litre i-VTEC petrol engine that produces 121PS of power and 145Nm of torque. This unit is mated to either a 6-speed manual transmission or a continuously variable transmission (CVT) automatic. In India, the Honda Elevate competes against a raft of popular mid-sized SUVs—the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, and the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder.
What This Win Means
To export of Maruti Suzuki Fronx and Honda Elevate to Japan is a big leap in the history of the Indian auto market. This will confirm India's capacity to make world-class automobiles with market control able to compete strongly in Japan. This is not just about pride for the manufacturers but for the Indian automotive sector as a whole, since it established full global potential for Indian-made vehicles.
