SUVs and MPVs are more common than ever in India. Over 2 million of these cars were sold in FY2024 between April and January, a significant 25% increase over the same period the previous year.
Out of all the SUVs that were sold, eight models sold more than 100,000 units apiece. These include the Mahindra Scorpio; Hyundai's Venue and Creta; Tata's Nexon and Punch; and MarutiBrezza, Ertiga, and Fronx. Approximately half of all SUV sales are made up of these eight models combined.
The competition to be the best-selling SUV of the year is fierce between the Hyundai Creta, MarutiBrezza, and Tata Nexon. It's hard to say who will win with two months to go.
Tata Nexon's Journey to Stay on Top
At present, the Tata Nexon is in the lead, having sold over 143,000 units. For the third consecutive year, it is vying to be the best-selling SUV. The Nexon has sold over 600,000 copies since its 2017 launch, making it a huge success for Tata. To accommodate varying budgets, it comes in a variety of models, including electric, diesel, and gasoline. Additionally, the Nexon received a high safety rating once more, which could increase sales—especially now that Tata has lowered the price of the electric variant.
MarutiBrezza Aims for a Comeback
The MarutiBrezza, once the best-selling SUV for four years, is now in second place. But it has crossed the impressive milestone of selling over a million units in India. The recent introduction of a CNG version has given its sales a big boost, showing that the Brezza is still a favorite.
Hyundai Creta Keeps the Competition Tough
The Hyundai Creta, the top midsize SUV, is not far behind in sales. It has had strong sales, especially with the launch of a new version in January 2024. Hyundai hopes to sell even more SUVs this year, with lots of people interested in the new Creta.
While we wait to find out which SUV will sell the most in FY2024, we can also consider the Tata Punch, a more recent model that is becoming more and more popular. Indian consumers have a lot to look forward to when selecting their new SUV because there are so many options available.
